The national average diesel price decreased by 5.6 cents, reaching $3.659, according to data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration released on January 27.

This drop comes just one week after a significant 11.3-cent increase, marking the largest rise in nearly a year and a half. The last major jump occurred the week of August 14, 2023, when the price surged by 13.9 cents to $4.378 per gallon.

Currently, the price is 9.8 cents higher than in the first reporting period of 2025 and 20.8 cents lower compared to the same time in 2024.

Regional Trends

The Gulf Coast experienced a 7.7-cent drop per gallon, marking the second-largest decrease of the week, following the Midwest’s 8-cent drop. Just last week, the Gulf Coast had the largest increase across all PADD regions, rising by 13.4 cents. The only regions showing price increases this week are the East Coast subregions of New England and the Central Atlantic, both seeing increases of less than 2 cents per gallon.

Gasoline Update

The national average price for a gallon of gasoline fell by 0.6 cents, bringing it to $3.103 per gallon. This is 0.8 cents higher than the price was at this time last year.
