Diesel prices saw a sharp increase during the first reporting period of the new year, jumping 5.8 cents to reach a national average of $3.561 per gallon, according to data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration released on January 6.

The Gulf Coast region experienced the largest rise, climbing 7.3 cents to $3.269 per gallon, though it continues to maintain the lowest average price across regions.

Nationally, diesel prices have gone up by a total of 8.5 cents over the past three weeks, marking a reversal from the relatively stable prices seen in late November and December. This week’s hike is the most significant since a 4.7-cent rise on October 14.

Compared to the same time in 2024, the national average is down 26.7 cents, reflecting improved fuel supply conditions and lower demand in certain regions.

Year-Over-Year Changes
The steepest declines from last year were observed in New England and California, where prices dropped by 55.1 cents and 53.4 cents per gallon, respectively.

Regional Breakdown

East Coast (PADD 1): Diesel prices in the East Coast region increased by 4.7 cents, reaching an average of $3.634 per gallon. Subregional trends include:

  • New England (PADD 1A): Prices saw a slight rise of 1.8 cents to $3.771, continuing a steady trend but with a significant year-over-year decrease of 55.1 cents.
  • Central Atlantic (PADD 1B): A smaller increase of 2.7 cents brought the average to $3.801 per gallon.
  • Lower Atlantic (PADD 1C): Prices surged by 5.8 cents to $3.559, reflecting the broader national trend of rising prices.

Midwest (PADD 2): The Midwest experienced a 6.1-cent jump, bringing the average to $3.530 per gallon. This marks one of the most notable weekly increases, highlighting a continued upward trajectory in the region.

Gulf Coast (PADD 3): The Gulf Coast saw the sharpest rise this week, with prices climbing 7.3 cents to $3.269. Despite this increase, the region remains the cheapest in the country for diesel.

Rocky Mountain (PADD 4): Diesel prices rose by 6 cents to $3.430 per gallon. The region continues to show significant year-over-year declines, with prices down 36.7 cents from January 2024.

West Coast (PADD 5): Prices increased by 3.7 cents to an average of $4.147 per gallon. Subregional details:

  • West Coast less California: A 3.4-cent rise brought prices to $3.739 per gallon.
  • California: Prices increased by 4.2 cents, reaching $4.618, maintaining the highest diesel prices nationwide.
