Kentucky State Police (KSP) will join a safety initiative this month aimed at reducing crashes involving commercial vehicles. From Monday, November 18, 2024, through Wednesday, November 20, 2024, KSP’s Commercial Vehicle Enforcement (CVE) team will participate in a focused traffic enforcement effort to help prevent accidents with commercial motor vehicles.

“During this effort, KSP Commercial Vehicle Inspectors will open scale facilities, ensuring commercial drivers follow safety regulations, including hours of service compliance, commercial driver license compliance, medical certification and commercial motor vehicle credentialing,” troopers said.

Throughout the three-day event, troopers will be watching for hazardous driving behaviors on the interstate, including aggressive driving, speeding, tailgating, failure to wear a seatbelt, and driving under the influence.

“KSP is honored to be a part of this initiative to make it safer for everyone to travel through our state during the upcoming holiday season,” said Sgt. Jason Morris, West Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Spokesperson. “We are committed to preventing dangerous driver behaviors and educating motorists on sharing the road safely with commercial trucks.”

The KSP traffic enforcement initiative is part of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s broader Operation SafeDRIVE (Distracted Reckless Impaired Visibility Enforcement) campaign.

As part of this effort, KSP encourages drivers to follow these tips to help prevent accidents with commercial vehicles:

  • Stay out of blind spots: Large vehicles have extensive blind spots on all four sides.
  • Pass safely: Make sure the truck driver can see you in their side mirror before passing, and always use your turn signal.
  • Avoid cutting off large vehicles: Large trucks require the length of two football fields to come to a full stop when traveling at highway speeds.
  • Don’t tailgate: Following too closely puts you in the truck’s blind spot, creating a dangerous situation.
