The Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) is set to carry out a chain inspection on Interstate 84.
This inspection event is scheduled for November 7, 2024, on the eastbound side of I-84 near mile marker 217, just east of Pendleton. According to ODOT, the goal of this check is to inform semi truck drivers about chain-up requirements and the proper use of chains.
Starting from mile marker 213, the speed limit will be reduced to 55 m.p.h., with signs directing trucks and vehicles pulling trailers to stay in the right lane. Cones will be placed to separate the right and left lanes as drivers approach the inspection point at mile marker 217.
At the inspection site, ODOT staff, Motor Carrier Enforcement Officers, and the Oregon State Patrol will be present to ask drivers brief questions about their equipment. ODOT notes that this process should take no more than 15 seconds per driver.
“We experience several extended freeway closures during winter due to vehicles not chaining up when required,” said ODOT District 12 Manager Rich Lani.
The November 17 event is intended as an educational opportunity for truck drivers; however, ODOT plans to conduct routine chain inspections at mile marker 217 once winter weather arrives.
“Drivers with the appropriate traction devices can install them, undergo inspection, and continue their journey. Drivers who do not have the correct equipment will be sent back to the Exit 216 interchange to address the issues or return west on I-84,” officials said.
