The Arizona Department of Public Safety (AZDPS) has shared the outcomes of a recent commercial vehicle brake inspection operation conducted at interstate rest areas.

The two-day safety initiative, called “Operation Airbrake,” was held in northern Arizona on August 27 and 28, 2024.

Inspectors focused on commercial vehicles stopping at rest areas along I-17 in Munds Park and McGuireville, as well as I-40 in Parks, checking for “missing, damaged, or defective parts,” particularly brake pads and linings.

Over the 48-hour period, 178 inspections were completed, resulting in the discovery of 521 violations in driver and vehicle reports.

In addition, 45 vehicles and 16 drivers were taken out of service, and one carrier received an out-of-service violation.

This safety detail was part of the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s annual Brake Safety Week inspections.
