Michigan legislators are mulling over a fresh set of rules aimed at limiting large trucks from hogging the fast lane. State Representative Will Bruck’s HB 5304 recently cleared the House Transportation, Mobility, and Infrastructure Committee and is now set for a full House review.
If passed, the bill would bar trucks weighing over 10,000 pounds from occupying the left lane on highways with three or more lanes. Additionally, it mandates that trucks stick to the right lane when construction reduces lanes to two.
Exceptions are carved out for scenarios like preparing for a left turn, navigating through hazardous conditions, or complying with construction zone signage.
Bruck emphasizes that the goal of the legislation is to bolster both traffic flow and safety across Michigan’s road network.
“With unanimous approval from the transportation committee, it’s clear that our plan is gaining traction,” Bruck said. “By making these simple changes, we can minimize congestion, make our expressways safer, and help drivers navigate our expressways with less frustration of gridlock.”
