As per a report, the North Carolina Highway Patrol (NCHP) is employing new methods to detect distracted truck drivers. Along Interstate 40, they have set up specialized equipment to address the issue of distracted driving among commercial vehicle operators.

This innovative technology involves cameras that capture images of passing trucks’ license plates and the drivers inside the cabs. Utilizing Artificial Intelligence (AI), the system can analyze these images to determine whether the truck drivers are using their phones or are otherwise distracted. Once the AI identifies such behavior, it immediately alerts nearby troopers, allowing them to initiate a traffic stop promptly. The system even includes a countdown timer, indicating when the vehicle will pass by the officer.

In case of a violation, fines of up to $100 may be imposed. Additionally, the technology is capable of identifying seatbelt violations as well.

It is essential to note that this technology is specifically designed to target commercial vehicle drivers and not passenger vehicle drivers, as mentioned in the report.

The technology responsible for detecting illegal driving behaviors is supplied by Acucensus, a company based in Australia. Acucensus specializes in offering solutions designed to identify and address various unlawful activities related to driving.
