The West Texas Division of the Texas Department of Public Safety has shared an overview of its enforcement activities in the Permian Basin for 2024.

In total, troopers conducted 8,329 inspections of commercial motor vehicles at Level I, Level II, and Level III within the district.

Here is a summary of the region’s troopers’ actions in 2024:

  • Total Number of Inspections Completed: 8,329
  • Total Number of Vehicles Placed Out-of-Service: 4,000
  • Vehicle Out-of-Service Rate: 48.0%
  • Total Number of Drivers Placed Out-of-Service: 1,419
  • Driver Out-of-Service Rate: 17%
  • Total Number of All Violations Issued: 50,931
  • Total Number of Equipment Violations Issued: 38,567
  • Total Number of Registration Violations Issued: 2,044
  • Total Number of Overweight Violations Issued: 1,698

In a Facebook post announcing the results, the TDPS said, “On a daily basis, CVE Troopers seek to remove unsafe drivers and commercial motor vehicles from our roadways before they are involved in a crash, as well as holding the key responsibility in enforcing the state’s weight limitations. Besides taking enforcement action on the side of the road, these specially trained troopers spent countless hours throughout the year in educating drivers, mechanics, and motor carrier representatives on best safety practices to assist them in achieving regulatory compliance.” 

The Permian Basin, situated in western Texas and southeastern New Mexico, is the largest oil field in the United States. It contributes approximately 40% of the nation’s oil production and 15% of its natural gas output.
