The Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT) has issued a warning to commercial truck drivers about severe high winds in central Wyoming starting Wednesday.
According to WYDOT’s Facebook post, a major High Wind Event coupled with an Extreme Blow-Over Risk will affect large parts of Wyoming from Wednesday into Thursday. Some areas may also experience slick roads, black ice, and blowing snow through the night.
Winds are forecasted to reach up to 70 mph in central Wyoming beginning Wednesday morning, December 18, and lasting until early Thursday morning, December 19, in certain locations.
Interstate 80 is expected to face crosswinds of 70 mph or higher from Cheyenne through Laramie to Rawlins, starting Wednesday morning and continuing until around 10 a.m. Thursday. Winds exceeding 55 mph are likely Wednesday night on I-80 from the northeastern state line to Cheyenne.
On Interstate 25, crosswinds of 70 mph or more are anticipated Wednesday morning through early Thursday from Cheyenne to Douglas, with winds around 55 mph in the Douglas-to-Buffalo section Wednesday afternoon. By Wednesday night, crosswinds of 70 mph or higher are expected from the Colorado state line to Cheyenne on I-25.
Additional strong winds of 60 to 70 mph are predicted Wednesday afternoon into the evening on Highway 258 Outer Drive and WY 28 South Pass.
Interstate 90, from Buffalo to Sheridan, will also encounter crosswinds of about 55 mph for a short period Wednesday evening.
