If you’re planning to drive through Colorado this winter, take note of recent updates to the state’s chain laws.
Last year, Colorado’s Legislature expanded the areas covered by existing chain requirements, with the new law taking effect on August 7.
Previously, truck drivers were required to carry chains on Interstate 70 between Dotsero and Morrison. Now, from September 1 through May 31 each year, all commercial vehicles over 16,000 pounds must carry four snow chains or equivalent traction devices if traveling on the following roads:
- I-70 west of milepost 259 (Morrison)
- Colorado Highway 9 between mileposts 63 and 97 (Frisco to Fairplay)
- Route 40 west of milepost 256 (Empire)
- US Route 50 west of milepost 225 (Salida)
- US Route 160 west of milepost 250 (Morrison)
- US Route 550 between mileposts 0 and 130 (State line south of Durango to Montrose)
Additionally, there are new lane restrictions for commercial vehicles. Truck drivers are prohibited from using the left lane in the following areas:
- Glenwood Canyon
- Dowd Junction (a curvy stretch of I-70 between Avon and Vail)
- The west side of Vail Pass
- The grades on both sides of the Eisenhower-Johnson tunnels
- Georgetown Hill
- Floyd Hill
Truckers should keep an eye out for new signs in these areas that highlight the restrictions.
Commercial drivers are encouraged to visit freight.colorado.gov and cotrip.org to plan their trip and make sure they comply with the updated regulations.
