Pennsylvania officials have announced that a bridge, hit last week by an oversized vehicle, will stay closed for a significant duration.

The incident happened on June 12, affecting the bridge on Route 6 over Sugar Creek in Troy Township, Pennsylvania.

A truck transporting an empty steel tank collided with the Route 6 bridge, resulting in damage. Photos from the scene reveal that the truck’s oversized load partially dislodged from the trailer and got stuck in the bridge.

Fortunately, there were no injuries.

Transportation authorities managed to remove the truck and the steel tank, but the damage to the bridge is estimated to cost between $1 million and $2 million.

“This bridge carries around 4,000 vehicles a day, and a healthy percentage of those vehicles are truck traffic. And it’s not lost on me that Route 6 in northern Pennsylvania is an interstate equivalent as far as I’m concerned, and the importance of this road speaks for itself,” PennDOT Secretary Mike Carroll told PA Homepage.

Route 6 is closed in both directions between Route 4017 (Leona Road) and Route 3034 (Mud Creek Road).

The Bradford County Department of Public Safety has indicated that the bridge is expected to reopen in late August 2024.

In the meantime, drivers are being redirected to use Leona Road, Route 4014 (Springfield Road), and Route 14 as a detour.
