This week, the Montana Department of Transportation (MDT) is unveiling a new rest stop near Three Forks.

The Headwaters Rest Area, situated at US 287 near the I-90 junction, will officially open its doors at 9 a.m. on Friday, April 5.

MDT intends for the Headwaters Rest Area to replace the outdated and too-small rest stop located at the 19th Avenue interchange in Bozeman.

Features of the Headwaters Rest Area include:

  • 35 spaces for trucks and RVs
  • 22 spots for regular vehicles
  • License plate cameras equipped with infrared technology to monitor traffic entering and exiting the rest area
  • A Law Enforcement Office available for use by the Broadwater County Sheriff, Montana Highway Patrol, and MDT Motor Carrier Services
  • A fenced area for pets
  • LED lighting throughout the pedestrian and parking areas
  • Eight private restrooms illuminated by LED lights

According to officials, having a Law Enforcement Office at a rest area is uncommon, but it is anticipated to be beneficial for nearby communities.

MDT explains that the rest area’s design will allow local law enforcement, including the Sheriff and Montana Highway Patrol, to have visibility of the area from US 287 and to conduct regular patrols to ensure safety.
