Peterbilt Motors Company revealed a new 72-inch low-roof sleeper setup for its Model 589 tractor on March 8th.

This sleeper design boasts a tall wardrobe and a microwave tray on the passenger side, along with a workstation and storage cabinet on the driver’s side. Optional features include a right-hand cubby, refrigerator, and a shelf above the bunk.

Additionally, the truck comes equipped with four standard 12-volt outlets, factory-installed inverters, provisions for aftermarket inverter installation, and provisions for mounting a 22-inch flat-screen TV, according to the manufacturer.

Peterbilt, a subsidiary of Paccar Inc., introduced this low-roof sleeper option in response to customer demand, as stated by Jake Montero, Peterbilt’s assistant general manager of sales and marketing, to Transport Topics.

This latest version of the Model 589, which debuted in May 2023, marks the third low-roof configuration option introduced by the company in recent weeks. Previously, on February 23rd, Peterbilt unveiled two new configurations for car carrier cabs — the Model 567 UltraLow Roof Day Cab and the Model 589 UltraLow Roof 58-inch Sleeper.

According to Montero, the introduction of the 72-inch low-roof option completes the range of sleeper configurations available for the Model 589.

This lineup includes:

  • A 44-inch low-roof option
  • A 58-inch low-roof option
  • A 58-inch high-roof configuration
  • The newly introduced 72-inch low-roof option
  • A 72-inch high-roof option
  • An 80-inch high-roof option

For power, the Model 589 offers the choice between MX-13 and X15 engines, which can be paired with Eaton RT and FR Manual, TX-12/Endurant, TX-18/Endurant XD, or Allison 4000/4500/4700 transmissions.

Peterbilt provides the Model 589 in various configurations suitable for on-highway, medium-duty, vocational, and car carrier applications.

Production of the Model 589 commenced in January. Compared to its predecessor, the Model 589 features a wider cab platform, similar to other trucks in Peterbilt’s lineup. This wider platform translates to increased interior space, with the available room expanding from 1.9 meters to 2.1 meters. Additionally, there’s around eight inches of added space between the seats and more room from front to back.

Peterbilt’s flagship Model 579 also utilizes this wider cab platform.

The Model 589 replaced the older Model 389, which made its debut in 2007. Over the lifetime of the Model 389, at least 110,000 units were sold.

On March 12, the company introduced the Paccar TX-12 Pro automated transmission for both the Model 579 and, for the first time, the Model 567.

The TX-12 Pro transmission is designed to work with engines producing up to 1,700 pound-feet of torque and a maximum gross combination weight rating of 70,000 pounds.

Peterbilt highlighted several features of the TX-12 Pro, including dual power takeoff functionality for powering multiple hydraulic devices simultaneously, an extreme-duty clutch to enhance low-speed maneuvering with larger loads, a rock-free mode, off-highway calibration with shift points tailored for various off-road conditions to minimize frequent shifting, and a secondary configuration allowing toggling between two calibrations based on load or terrain requirements.

“The addition of the Paccar TX-12 Pro automated transmission enhances Peterbilt’s ability to provide the best-performing trucks in the industry with improved efficiency, low-speed maneuverability and improved reliability to our vocational customers,” said Montero.
