On Friday, TravelCenters of America (TA) unveiled a new initiative aimed at enhancing safety measures across their truck stops, particularly prioritizing the well-being of women drivers and employees in these facilities.

This initiative, launched on International Women’s Day, underscores TA’s commitment to recognizing and supporting female truck drivers and staff. They highlighted that women comprise 43% of their workforce and 12% of all truck drivers in the United States.

As part of the effort, TA has established a Women’s Safety Advisory Group, consisting of female truckers and professionals from the industry. This group will provide counsel to TA on implementing strategies to improve safety at their travel centers for all guests, irrespective of gender.

In addition, TA announced that Debbie Shelton, Vice President of Retail Operations Support, will embark on a week-long journey alongside ACE Doran Hauling & Rigging Co. OTR driver, Violet Helferich. This ride-along aims to offer Shelton firsthand insights into the challenges faced by female professional drivers. Together, they will travel from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma to Brandon, South Dakota to load freight, and then proceed to a wind farm in the southern U.S.

“Our sites serve as a home away from home for the millions of professional drivers in our nation and we are committed to ensuring they feel as safe and secure while visiting us as they do in their own home,” said Debi Boffa, CEO of TA. “Safety is our top priority, and we look forward to learning how we can foster an even safer environment for all travelers and our team members, regardless of gender.”
