Numerous states in the northeast have imposed bans on tractor-trailer travel owing to a significant winter storm.
A powerful winter storm is causing extensive snowfall across the northeastern United States on Tuesday, prompting authorities to impose limitations on the movement of commercial vehicles.
Below are the details of the travel restrictions for Commercial Motor Vehicles (CMVs) in Connecticut, Rhode Island, New York, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey.
Connecticut Tractor Trailer Travel Restrictions
Starting from midnight on Tuesday, February 13, a ban has been implemented prohibiting tandem tractor trailers and empty tractor trailers from using any limited access highways in Connecticut until further notification.
Rhode Island Tractor Trailer Travel Restrictions
As of midnight on Tuesday, February 13, a prohibition has been enacted, barring all tractor trailers from accessing both interstate highways and state roads until further notice.
New York Tractor Trailer Travel Restrictions
Starting at midnight on Tuesday, February 13, there will be a prohibition on the travel of tandem trailers and empty trucks and trailers on the New York State Thruway and specific highways listed until further notice.
- I-87 between exit 24 (Albany – Montreal – I-90 East – I-87 North) and the New York City Line – Major Deegan Expressway (I-87)
- Berkshire Connector from the Thruway (I-87) mainline to the Massachusetts State Line (I-90)
- New England Thruway (I-95) from the Bruckner Expressway (I-95) to the Connecticut State Line
- Cross Westchester Expressway (I-287) from the Thruway (I-87) to the New England Thruway (I-95)
Massachusetts Tractor Trailer Travel Restrictions
Empty or tandem tractor-trailer units are not permitted on I-90 from the New York border to Logan Airport.
Pennsylvania Tractor Trailer Travel Restrictions
As of 3 a.m. on Tuesday, February 13, the following travel restrictions are now enforced:
- Tier 2:
- PA Turnpike (I-76) from New Stanton (Exit 75) to Breezewood (Exit 161)
- Interstate 78, entire length
- I-80 from I-79 to milepost 173 (Lamar)
- I-99, entire length
- U.S. 22 from I-78 to the New Jersey border.
- Route 33, entire length
- PA Turnpike Northeast Extension (I-476) from I-78 to I-80
- Tier 4 (no commercial vehicles):
- I-80 from milepost 173 (Lamar) to the New Jersey border
- I-81 from I-78 to the New York border
- I-84, entire length
- I-180, entire length
- I-380, entire length
- PA Turnpike Northeast Extension (I-476) from I-80 to Clarks Summit (Exit 130)
Under Tier 2 restrictions, the following vehicles are not permitted on affected roadways:
- Tractors without trailers
- Tractors towing unloaded or lightly loaded enclosed trailers, open trailers or tank trailers
- Tractors towing unloaded or lightly loaded tandem trailers
- Tractors towing loaded tandem trailers without chains or Alternate Traction Devices (ATDs)
- Enclosed unloaded or lightly loaded cargo delivery trucks/box trucks that meet the definition of a CMV
- Passenger vehicles (cars, SUV’s, pickup trucks, etc.) towing trailers
- Recreational vehicles/motorhomes
- School buses, commercial buses and motor coaches, regardless of the availability of trains or ATDs
- Motorcycles
New Jersey Tractor Trailer Travel Restrictions
As of midnight on Tuesday, February 13, there is a travel restriction in effect for commercial vehicles on the following roadways:
- I-78 (entire length)
- I-80 (entire length)
- I-280 (entire length)
- I-287 (entire length)
- Route 440 (between I-287 to the Outer Bridge Crossing)
- I-195 (entire length)
- I-295 (Pennsylvania border/Scudder Falls Bridge to Exit 60 at I-195)
The travel restriction applies to all tractor trailers and empty straight CDL-weighted trucks.
