The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) has set forth a comprehensive initiative aimed at enhancing truck parking facilities on a statewide scale. The proposal entails the incorporation of approximately 850 additional truck parking spaces across 10 different sites throughout Arizona.
Presented on December 4, ADOT’s plan is geared towards a substantial improvement in truck parking accessibility, particularly along the bustling interstates. The blueprint outlines ADOT’s intention to introduce 846 new truck parking spaces along key routes such as I-10, I-40, and I-8.
The initiative includes the incorporation of truck parking spaces into existing rest areas and the establishment of three new facilities exclusively designated for commercial vehicles. The Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) aims to realize this plan with the aid of $32 million in federal funding, focusing on three critical locations:
- I-10 Burnt Wells Rest Area near Tonopah, with a proposed addition of 103 spaces.
- I-40 Meteor Crater Rest Area near Winslow, featuring plans for an extra 140 spaces.
- A new I-10/State Route 186 safe lot just west of Willcox, where ADOT intends to create 127 spaces.
Upon the completion of these initial projects, ADOT envisions expanding truck parking to several other locations, pending additional funding:
- I-40 Crazy Creek, a new safe lot approximately 35 miles east of Holbrook, with a planned 176 spaces.
- I-10 Ehrenberg Rest Area, incorporating 51 spaces.
- I-10 San Simon Rest Area, with proposals for an additional 80 spaces.
- I-10 Bouse Wash Rest Area, intending to add 55 spaces.
- I-40 Seligman, a new safe lot, with plans for 72 spaces.
- I-10 Sacaton Rest Area, allocating 20 spaces.
- I-8 Mohawk Rest Area, with the proposal to include 22 spaces.
These truck parking projects are supplementary to ongoing initiatives amounting to $18 million, which encompass improvements at the following rest areas:
- I-40 Haviland Rest Area
- I-40 Parks Rest Area
- I-17 Christensen Rest Area
- I-17 McGuireville Rest Area
- I-17 Sunset Point Rest Area
