Georgia Governor Brian Kemp’s office announced on Wednesday that the state will continue its suspension of diesel and gasoline taxes until November 29. The temporary relief from taxes on motor and locomotive fuels, which amount to 31.2 cents per gallon for gasoline and 35 cents per gallon for diesel, was initially set to expire this Saturday. Governor Kemp’s decision to extend the tax suspension is aimed at offering drivers some financial relief during the Thanksgiving holiday season.
This recent action represents the third occasion since early summer when a moratorium on fuel taxes has been enacted into law in Georgia.
To put it in perspective, the average price for a gallon of diesel fuel in Georgia, as reported by AAA, currently stands at $3.999, which is a decrease from $4.96 per gallon a year ago. Comparatively, the national average for diesel fuel prices is $4.39 per gallon, according to data from AAA.
It’s important to note that in Georgia, motor fuel taxes are paid by fuel distributors, not local gas stations. Due to the time gap between when distributors pay taxes on fuel and when it actually reaches the pump, the cost of fuel to consumers can fluctuate based on when they fill up their tanks.
