Kentucky has recently raised the speed limit on two segments of U.S. 68/KY 80 in certain areas of Trigg and Graves counties, located in the southwestern part of the state. These particular highway sections, both featuring four lanes, now display speed limit signs indicating 65 mph, which is an increase from the previous limit of 55 mph.
The speed limit of 55 mph will still be in effect for specific stretches of the road, such as the 9-mile portion passing through the Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area, the area near the Interstate 24 Cadiz Exit 65 Interchange east of Cadiz, the U.S. 641/KY 80 intersection north of Murray, and the vicinity of the KY 121 Bypass at Mayfield, where these areas have traffic signals.
Notably, the speed limit along U.S. 68/KY 80, which extends from Cadiz, through Christian, Todd, and Logan counties up to the edge of Bowling Green, was initially increased to 65 mph in October 2012, further enhancing the corridor across southern Kentucky. Additionally, a portion of KY 80 in Calloway and Graves counties experienced a speed limit increase in October 2015. This change in speed limits also applies to four-lane sections of U.S. 641 and U.S. 45.
“The U.S. 68/Kentucky 80 Corridor is a well-designed, well-constructed highway that can safely accommodate the higher speed limit,” Gov. Andy Beshear said. “This corridor already is a tremendous asset as a 4-lane connector between Interstate 24 at Cadiz and Interstate 69 at Mayfield. By updating the out-of-date speed limit, we are reducing congestion and helping Kentuckians get to their destination quicker and safer, while also increasing economic development by enhancing the flow of commerce in this area.”
Kentucky Transportation Secretary Jim Gray has issued an order that mandates the elevation of the speed limit. This change affects a 6.5-mile stretch of U.S. 68/KY 80, extending from the western boundary of Cadiz to the Lake Barkley Bridge in Canton. Additionally, the speed limit has been raised along a 2.5-mile section of the KY 80 Mayfield South Bypass.
