The national average cost of diesel fuel has decreased after a small increase last week, dropping by 9.5 cents to reach $4.498 per gallon, as reported by data from the Energy Information Administration on October 9.

This marks the second decline in diesel prices in the past three weeks. The previous decrease was 4.7 cents on September 25, followed by a slight increase of seven-tenths of a cent. Prior to this, the price of diesel had been consistently rising every week since July 24, amounting to an increase of 82.7 cents in total.

Now, the price of diesel, the primary fuel for the trucking industry, is 72.6 cents per gallon lower than it was at this time in 2022.

According to the EIA’s weekly survey, the price of diesel fuel decreased in all 10 regions. The largest decline was observed in the Gulf Coast, where it dropped by 14 cents to $4.139 per gallon. Meanwhile, the smallest decrease was reported in New England, where the price went down by 3 cents to $4.577.

In addition to diesel, the average price of a gallon of gasoline also saw a decrease, falling by 11.4 cents to $3.684. This is notably 22.8 cents less than the price of gasoline at this time last year.
