This week, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) issued a reminder to truck drivers regarding the importance of maintaining clear windshields to ensure unobstructed visibility. Specifically, on September 12, the CHP’s Commercial Vehicle Section posted a message on Facebook urging truckers to avoid placing objects on their dashboards that could obstruct their view while driving. This reminder emphasizes the importance of safety on the road for both truck drivers and other motorists.
“Not only are tinted windows to the front and sides of a driver illegal, but so are items on the dash or hanging in front of the driver. The items in the photo block the driver’s view of the roadway ahead. A clear view of the roadway ahead will help keep everyone safe on California highways,” CHP said.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) permits the use of tinted windshields and side windows, provided that they allow at least 70 percent of normal light transmission. In California, there are comparable regulations regarding window tinting for vehicles, but they limit tinting to only the uppermost part of the windshield.
