The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) has announced that this year’s Operation Safe Driver Week will take place from July 9 to 15. This special law enforcement motor vehicle safety effort aims to address unsafe driving behaviors exhibited by both commercial motor vehicle drivers and passenger vehicle drivers. Throughout the week, law enforcement officers in the United States, Canada, and Mexico will be actively monitoring and pulling over drivers engaging in such behaviors.
CVSA has chosen speeding as the primary focus for this year’s Operation Safe Driver Week, as it remains a persistent issue on our roadways. Speeding is known to increase the frequency and severity of accidents, leading to fatalities and injuries. Last year’s Safe Driver Week saw a significant number of vehicles being stopped by officers in Canada and the U.S., with over 35,000 commercial motor vehicles and passenger vehicles pulled over. During this time, officers issued 8,586 citations and 7,299 warnings for speeding or violations related to basic speed laws and driving too fast for conditions. Out of these, 2,577 warnings were given to commercial motor vehicle drivers, while 4,722 were given to passenger vehicle drivers. Additionally, citations were issued to 1,490 commercial motor vehicle drivers and 7,096 passenger vehicle drivers.
With Operation Safe Driver Week approaching, drivers are advised to pay close attention to speed limit signs and ensure they comply with the established regulations. Law enforcement agencies will be actively enforcing speed limits and taking appropriate action against those found engaging in unsafe driving behaviors.
The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) has announced a weeklong driver safety traffic enforcement and awareness campaign with the goal of identifying unsafe drivers, discouraging dangerous driving behaviors, and encouraging positive driving habits through interactions between officers and drivers. This campaign recognizes that traffic stops and interactions with law enforcement play a crucial role in reducing problematic driving behaviors.
Unsafe driver behaviors encompass a range of actions, including speeding, improper lane changes, passing or turns, driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, using a handheld device while driving, and failing to wear a seat belt, among others. These behaviors pose significant risks to both the drivers themselves and other road users.
By conducting targeted traffic enforcement and engaging with drivers, law enforcement officers aim to address these unsafe behaviors, promote road safety, and encourage drivers to adopt responsible driving habits. The campaign emphasizes the importance of compliance with traffic laws and regulations to enhance overall safety on the roads.
