Attention motorists traveling on Interstate 75 near Detroit next week, please be prepared for potential traffic delays and a detour. Starting at 9 p.m. on Friday, June 9, construction crews will be shutting down both directions of I-75 from US-24 to Saginaw Road. This closure is necessary for the demolition of the Davisburg Road bridge that spans over the interstate. As a result, all vehicles will be redirected onto Dixie Highway as the designated detour route. The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) has stated that the construction work is expected to be completed and normal traffic flow is anticipated to resume by 5 a.m. on Monday, June 12. Please plan your travel accordingly and allow for additional time to accommodate these temporary driving restrictions.
As part of the Michigan Department of Transportation’s extensive investment of $160 million, a major project is underway to resurface and repair a stretch of I-75 from M-15 (Ortonville Road) to the Oakland/Genesee county line. This comprehensive initiative encompasses various improvements over a span of 15 miles, spanning a duration of four years.
The project involves a multitude of crucial tasks, including resurfacing I-75, addressing the repairs of 11 bridges, implementing drainage enhancements, replacing culverts, updating signs, and installing guardrails. These essential upgrades will be carried out in different locations, with distinct schedules throughout the designated 15-mile section over the course of the project’s duration.
Looking ahead to the coming years, specific milestones have been outlined for the project. In 2024, the focus will be on milling and resurfacing the northbound lanes of I-75 from M-15 to the county line. During this period, both northbound and southbound traffic will share the existing southbound roadway, accommodating two lanes of travel.
Moving into 2025, attention will shift to the southbound lanes of I-75 from the county line to M-15. Similar to the previous phase, traffic will be directed to the existing northbound roadway while milling and resurfacing work takes place.
Finally, in 2026, the project will reach its conclusion with the removal of temporary crossovers and the completion of any remaining miscellaneous activities.
The overall aim of this significant endeavor is to enhance the condition and functionality of I-75, ensuring safer and smoother journeys for motorists.
