Amidst the media focus on electric vehicles, Peterbilt has provided assurance to its customers that the long hood conventional truck will remain a steadfast presence in the foreseeable future, as demonstrated by the launch of the Model 589. This new model replaces the beloved Model 389, a traditional-styled truck that had gained significant popularity.
The Model 589 retains many of the distinctive design elements that made the Model 389 a favorite among truck enthusiasts. Features such as cab-mounted mirrors, pod-style headlights, dual stacks, and external air cleaners have been preserved. However, Peterbilt has made notable improvements, including a wider 2.1-meter cab that grants drivers an additional eight inches of space. This enhancement proves beneficial when entering the sleeper or storing equipment in the day cab.
To unveil the Model 589, a grand event was organized at the Texas Motor Speedway on May 9. Thousands of dealers and customers gathered to witness the unveiling of the truck and had the opportunity to test drive it on the track. Additionally, a Pride & Class show’n’shine was held outside the venue, attracting over 200 Peterbilt show and working trucks for display and admiration. This event brought together truck enthusiasts in a celebration of Peterbilt’s legacy and its dedication to delivering exceptional trucks.
Peterbilt’s launch of the Model 589, accompanied by the enthusiastic reception at the Texas Motor Speedway, highlights the brand’s ongoing commitment to the long hood conventional design and its unwavering support from customers and trucking communities alike.
Customer consultations
Jason Skoog, Peterbilt general manager and Paccar vice-president, said those same enthusiasts were consulted in the design of the 589.
“Distinction, customization, and connection to the heritage were things they most valued,” he said.
The recent update implemented a standardization process for the cab size of Peterbilt’s Class 8 line, setting it at 2.1 meters. This update also marked the completion of a comprehensive product line refresh. Jason Skoog, the General Manager of Peterbilt, proudly stated that the company now possesses the most up-to-date cabs in the industry, not only for their Class 8 vehicles but also for their medium-duty line. This commitment to modernization ensures that Peterbilt remains at the forefront of innovation, providing their customers with the latest advancements in cab design and functionality across their entire range of trucks.
“We’re all out of trucks to refresh,” he said.
The 389, which has been in circulation since 2006 and has seen a remarkable 110,000 units sold, is now being replaced. Jason Skoog mentioned that there was a surge in sales last year, possibly attributed to rumors about its discontinuation. However, fans of the 389 will be pleased to find that the new 589 model offers a sense of familiarity while also providing additional space. Peterbilt has taken into account the preferences and needs of the enthusiasts, ensuring that the transition to the 589 maintains the beloved qualities of the 389 while incorporating improvements and expanded dimensions. This way, loyal fans can continue to enjoy their favorite features while embracing the enhanced capabilities and extra room offered by the 589.
“We kept the classic exterior and upgraded the driver experience and amenities,” explained Jake Montero, assistant general manager – sales and marketing with Peterbilt. Modern features like predictive cruise control and tire pressure monitoring help drivers achieve good fuel economy while maintaining classic styling.
The Model 589 introduces several noteworthy features. The cab-mounted mirrors are both heated and motorized, providing convenience and improved visibility in various weather conditions. The fenders are equipped with sleek daytime running lights, adding a stylish touch to the overall design. Peterbilt has reintroduced the rectangular pattern design within the stainless grille, accentuated by a bright aluminum surround, giving the truck a distinctive and eye-catching appearance.
In terms of construction, the cab and hood of the Model 589 are made of aluminum. This choice not only helps reduce weight, contributing to improved fuel efficiency and performance but also simplifies repairs. In fact, minor dents can often be easily fixed using a rubber mallet, streamlining the maintenance process and minimizing downtime. The combination of these features and design elements makes the Model 589 a compelling choice, offering both aesthetic appeal and practical benefits to drivers and operators.
“The beauty about aluminum is, that damage won’t put you down on the side of the road,” said chief engineer Scott Newhouse. “We spent a lot of time talking to customers to understand the core values of the truck, and the aluminum hood was one of those things.”
The Model 589 incorporates 15-inch diameter external air cleaners, which serve two important purposes. Firstly, they contribute to the classic appearance of the truck, adding to its timeless aesthetic appeal. Secondly, these air cleaners have been designed with serviceability in mind. With just a quarter turn of the top, the air filter can be accessed and easily replaced without the need to open the hood. This feature streamlines the maintenance process, saving time and effort for operators.
Another notable feature inspired by classic-styled trucks is the inclusion of dual 7-inch stacks. These dual stacks not only pay homage to the traditional truck design but also add a touch of nostalgia and character to the Model 589. This combination of classic design elements with modern functionality showcases Peterbilt’s commitment to blending the best of both worlds, offering a truck that not only performs well but also captures the essence of timeless trucking style.
Transitioning from the 389 to the new Model 589 is made easy by using the same cooling module. This compatibility ensures a seamless switch between the two models, simplifying the transition for drivers and operators. Additionally, the cab-mounted mirrors of the Model 589 eliminate concerns about water entering the door through the mirror’s connections, providing added convenience and peace of mind.
Power options for the Model 589 include the Paccar MX-13 and the Cummins X15 engines. The Cummins X15 engine is particularly popular among customers with a need for power in severe service applications. To cater to different preferences and requirements, a comprehensive range of manual and automated manual transmissions from Paccar, Eaton, and the Cummins-Eaton joint venture are available.
The interior of the Model 589 has undergone a complete redesign to enhance driver comfort. Visibility has been significantly improved by 50%, ensuring drivers have a better view of their surroundings. The selection of colors and materials exudes luxury, creating a premium ambiance within the cabin. Even the pedal package has been upgraded to provide greater comfort for the driver.
The cab of the Model 589 boasts a quiet environment, thanks to its aluminum construction. This not only adds durability but also aids in noise reduction. LED lighting is used throughout the interior, providing efficient and clear illumination. The cabin also offers ample space for a 22-inch TV and a comfortable 42-inch mattress, catering to the needs of drivers spending extended periods on the road.
Legendary version
For customers seeking a heightened level of distinction on the highway, Peterbilt offers a Legendary package that pays tribute to the brand’s rich history. This package includes notable design elements that set the truck apart. On the side of the hood, a Peterbilt script proudly displays the brand’s name, adding a touch of nostalgia. The polished fenders and rockers are adorned with brightwork, further accentuating the truck’s polished appearance.
Inside the cabin, the Legendary package offers luxurious features. The seats are upholstered in a high-quality leather-grain material, with the script logo elegantly placed on the headrests. Unique stitching and badging adorn the door pad and dashboard, adding to the exclusivity of the package. Furthermore, the first 589 trucks to be built will be individually numbered, making them highly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts.
By offering the Legendary package, Peterbilt allows customers to personalize their Model 589 with distinctive features that reflect the brand’s heritage and evoke a sense of pride. This package not only enhances the truck’s appearance but also adds an element of exclusivity, making it a compelling choice for those who appreciate the legacy and craftsmanship associated with Peterbilt vehicles.
“It would not surprise me if this becomes the core spec’,” Skoog said of the Legendary version.
