In May of last year, the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) held the International Roadcheck initiative, which involved inspecting and enforcing commercial motor vehicles. The results showed that out of the 59,026 inspections carried out, 21.1% or 12,456 commercial motor vehicles and 6.2% or 3,714 drivers were placed out of service. These figures were the highest recorded since the world emerged from the pandemic.
In 2021, the number of inspections conducted during the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s International Roadcheck was significantly lower at 23,135. However, despite the lower number of inspections, the results showed that 21.8% or a total of vehicles were removed from the road, while 5.2% of drivers were also disqualified from operation.
The upcoming campaign for the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance’s International Roadcheck is scheduled for May 16-18, and it will put special emphasis on anti-lock braking systems (ABS) and cargo securement.
The Top 5 reasons for vehicle out of service violations during inspections are typically related to brakes, lights, tires, and cargo securement. On the other hand, the top reasons for driver violations are related to hours of service/logs and licensure issues.
CCJ, together with Mann+Hummel, will host a free hour-long webinar that will feature experts from some of the safest fleets in the trucking industry. The webinar will focus on discussing maintenance tips and best practices to make roadside inspections easier, and will also provide insights from the CVSA on inspection trends and common mistakes made by fleets. The webinar will include a live Q&A session with the panelists and will take place on Thursday, April 20 at 1PM Central Time. Carriers who are interested in attending can register for the webinar through the provided link.
For those who are unable to attend the live webinar on April 20, a recorded on-demand version of the event will be made available to all registrants. This allows individuals who are interested in the topic but have scheduling conflicts to still have access to the valuable information discussed during the webinar.
Registrants will hear from:
