The reconstruction of Interstate 75 in Oakland County near Detroit will continue on Friday, Feb. 24, if weather conditions are favorable. To facilitate the work, the southbound section of the highway from 13 Mile Road to I-696 will be closed temporarily to install a new traffic pattern. This will enable the project to move forward quickly, as confirmed by the Michigan Department of Transportation.
Starting at 11 p.m. on Friday, February 24th, there will be a closure of I-75 in both directions between I-696 and I-75 Business Loop, which is also known as Square Lake Road. The closure is expected to last until 5 a.m. on Monday, February 27th. Before the closure begins, crews will start closing ramps at 9 p.m. and lanes on I-75 at 10 p.m.
During this time, all ramps leading to northbound I-75 from I-696 to 14 Mile Road will be closed. Additionally, all ramps leading to southbound I-75 from M-59 to 11 Mile Road will also be closed.
During a closure of northbound I-75, drivers will not be able to travel on this road in the northbound direction. Instead, they will be directed to take a detour. The detour will involve turning west onto I-696 and traveling in that direction until reaching northbound M-1, which is also known as Woodward Avenue. From there, drivers will then turn east onto Square Lake Road until they reach northbound I-75.
For local traffic, entrance ramps to northbound I-75 will remain open from 14 Mile Road to Crooks Road/Corporate Drive. Southbound I-75 traffic will also be impacted by the closure and will need to follow a different detour. Drivers will need to take westbound Square Lake Road until they reach southbound M-1. From there, they will need to turn east onto I-696 until they reach southbound I-75.
Starting on Monday, February 27, a traffic change will occur on northbound I-75 between 13 Mile Road and I-696. Two-way traffic will be sharing the northbound lanes of I-75 in this area, with two lanes available in each direction. This traffic arrangement will be in effect until the end of the 2023 construction season.
Additionally, certain ramps will be closed in the area until that time. It is unclear which specific ramps will be affected, but the closure of these ramps will last until the end of the construction season in 2023.
- The 12 Mile Road exit and entrance ramps to southbound I-75,
- The 11 Mile Road exit and entrance ramps to southbound I-75,
- The southbound I-75 ramps to eastbound and westbound I-696.
Starting from Friday morning, the road closure will take place under I-75 on 12 Mile Road. The closure is necessary to ensure the safety of crews working on rebuilding the bridge that carries southbound I-75 over 12 Mile Road. The ramps to and from southbound I-75 on 12 Mile Road will also close in the morning.
However, starting from Monday, access to northbound I-75 from westbound 12 Mile Road will be maintained. Similarly, the exit to eastbound 12 Mile Road from northbound I-75 will also remain open.
